How the estimate works, with an example

The calculator turns your revenue into an hourly figure, then asks what share of it passes through the website and how many hours of downtime you expect in a year. Here is a simple illustration with round numbers, not a prediction.

Say the business takes $260,000 a year and the site earns during a 50-hour working week. That is $100 an hour ($260,000 divided by 50 hours a week and 52 weeks). If 80 percent of that revenue passes through the site and it is down for 8 hours in the year, the direct cost is $640 ($100 x 8 hours x 0.8). The calculator then adds an allowance for customers who do not come back and for the work of recovering from each incident, and rounds the result.

The figure is deliberately cautious, and it is only as good as the numbers you give it. Use it to compare the risk with the cost of a plan, not as a forecast.

About the calculator

How accurate is the estimate?

It is an illustration built from your own numbers and a cautious formula, not a forecast. Use it to compare the risk with the cost of a plan.

What counts as downtime?

Any time customers cannot use the site as intended: the site is down, the checkout fails, a form stops sending or a page is too slow to use.

Does it store my numbers?

The calculation runs from the four inputs you give it. If you ask for the report by email, we use your email to send it and keep the request so we can answer follow-up questions.

Which plan does it compare with?

It compares the estimated yearly risk with the plan that fits your revenue band, using our published prices.
